By air

The island of Crete has two main airports, Nikos Kazantzakis airport at Heraklion (HER) and Daskalogiannis airport at Chania (CHQ) that serve international and national flights, and are the most convenient ones for travel to/from Rethymno.

By sea

The island of Crete is served by ferries from Piraeus, which is the port of Athens, through the ports of Heraklion and Chania. The ferry companies that serve Crete are Minoan Lines, ANEK Lines, and Blue Star Ferries.

Land travel on Crete

One may travel from/to the airports and ports to/from Rethymo by intercity bus or taxi. There are also many car rental companies, both international and local ones, that operate offices in the airports.

There are two bus companies that serve Rethymno: KTEL Public bus service Chania – Rethymnon and KTEL Heraklion-Lasithi S.A.. From Heraklion airport, one has to take a bus or taxi for a few-minute ride to get to the intercity bus terminal, where one can board the bus to Rethymno. The port of Heraklion is in walking distance from the bus terminal. There are direct services from Chania airport and port to Rethymno. However, there are only four direct services daily from Chania airport; otherwise, one has to take a taxi or bus to the intercity bus terminal, from where buses depart hourly for Rethymno. Ticket prices currently are as follows (one way): Chania airport-Rethymno, 7.30 euros; Chania city center (bus terminal)-Rethymno, 6.20 euros; Heraklion city center (bus terminal)-Rethymno, 7.60 euros. However, prices may change due to inflation and the unpredictability of fuel cost.

Traveling from/to Heraklion airport to/from Rethymno by taxi currently costs ca. 100 euros (one way). Traveling from/to Chania airport to/from Rethymno by taxi currently costs ca. 90 euros (one way). However, prices may change due to inflation and the unpredictability of fuel cost. Taxi companies include, but are not limited to, Radio Taxi “Vrysinas”, Taxi Service Rethymno, Taxi Service Crete, and Radio Taxi Arkadi (no website; tel. no. [+30]2831035000).

Travel times vary between just under an hour (by taxi) to a little more than one and a half hours (by bus), depending on airport and means of transportation.
